Wuâerkaixi, an ethnic Uyghur, was born in Beijing in 1968. He was the founder of an independent studentsâ association at Beijing Normal University and after organising a successful demonstration in Tiananmen Square on 27 April 1989, was elected president of the Beijing Students Autonomous Union. Wuâerkaixi achieved prominence for boldly interrupting Premier Li Pengâs introduction, which was recorded on national television, during their first meeting in May 1989.
